Nigel B. Patterson
soul guide & professional coach
I am passionate about bringing a sense of meaning and purpose into people’s lives and their workplaces.
Equipped with a BSc Electronic Engineering degree (1981) and an MBA (1991), I have spent many years working in both major corporations and running my own companies. After profitably selling my company in Sydney, Australia in 2008 I embarked upon a two-year training program to become a Transpersonal Counsellor. This was later followed by a one-year Professional Coaching program in Miami in 2014. Today I live in beautiful Hawaii and support my remote clients via Skype.
Since graduating from university in 1981, my life was focused on work. By all outward appearances I was highly successful and in 1991 I was appointed divisional director of one of South Africa’s largest computer companies. However in 1993 I was forced to deal with a significant life crisis when my world collapsed. I was forced to confront the very uncomfortable "who am I?" question. This dark period precipitated four years of intensive soul journey work. As the saying goes, "when the student is ready the masters appear". Many teachers and healers suddenly appeared to help me through this life-threatening transition. I was forced to learn gratitude and humility. Their unconditional love and support has shaped me and influences the work I do today.
In the midst of my own crisis I co-founded a technology company in South Africa based fully on the principles espoused in Spiritual Intelligence (SQ), long before they were “discovered”, with dramatic results. Heart-based customer service differentiated the company from our competitors. Our customers wanted to be associated with a supplier who put them first above all else. In four short years the company grew from the initial team of five professionals to 22. We serviced several major South African corporations.
In 1997 I sold the company to a US investor and moved to Sydney, Australia where I purchased an Internet company. After 10 years of continued growth I profitably sold the business to a listed company in Brisbane. It was also in Sydney that I met my now husband.
In 2010 I completed a Diploma in Transpersonal Counseling in Sydney, Australia. Not only did this formalize the deep soul-based one-on-one informal support work I had been doing for many years, but it also rounding out my skills to be a highly effective turnaround specialist supporting executives and their business teams through their own transitions. At the same time I completed an Australian Government accredited certificate in Training and Assessment. This was instrumental in launching the training part of my career.
In 2012 we moved to the USA and settled for two years in the San Francisco Bay Area where I became immersed in the emerging Mindfulness and Wisdom movements. The palpable consciousness of Northern California added yet another dimension to my work.
To further round out my credentials and expertise, in 2014 I commenced an ICF-accredited Certified Professional Coach Certificate at the University of Miami. This program has added a useful layer to an already rich process I have developed over the years to bring out the best in individuals and teams. This program was completed whilst I was living in beautiful Miami enjoying the dynamic cosmopolitan landscape and the excitement and challenges that brings with it.
In early 2016 we moved to the Big Island of Hawaii. After several visits to the island it became apparent that Pele, the goddess of Kilauea, the most active volcano in the world, was calling. Her energies are raw and powerful. They support the transformation work I do and create the backdrop to the extraordinary journeys my clients take on their road to freedom. I feel most blessed to be able to continue my work today in such an incredible location.
In case you have not managed to keep up, the places I have lived read more like a transcript from the United Nations! I was born in Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania in 1958 and moved to South Africa with my parents after the very bloody revolution in 1964.
My formative years were in South Africa under the apartheid regime, this itself demanding a review of what is right and wrong in the complicated socio-political environment we find ourselves living in globally today. It was also a highly challenging time to be running a company, especially as the country transitioned to a full democracy.
In 1997 I moved to Sydney, Australia to follow a childhood dream. It was there that I acquired an internet company, ran that for 10 years before shifting out of technology and fully into soul-based healing and helping services, this being my passion.
In 2012 my now-husband whom I met in Sydney and I moved to San Francisco to explore the "pointy edge" of human consciousness. It was an exciting time. However, two years later, family commitments took us to Miami. Again, this was an extraordinary experience. The diversity and richness of the Latin cultures blending with a high materialistic focus gave me further insight into human dynamics.
And finally in early 2016, Hawaii called so we answered and now find ourselves stepping into the gentle embrace of the Aloha spirit of both the people and the island. I feel Hawaii will take my work to a whole new level.
I find I am most effective at supporting people and teams through periods of transition, from full-blown crisis through to planned change, including:
- Executives and the teams they lead, and
- Individuals seeking meaning and purpose in their lives.
My unique blend of practical executive experience together with the inner-depth work I have been initiated into and personally benefited from since 1993 creates an environment for extraordinary transformation to be realized by my clients, both at a personal and group level. The turnarounds I have personally facilitated and witnessed have been life-changing (and in some cases life-saving) for my clients. I use very specific and measurable processes for bringing about these transformations.
Likewise, through the application of the Ntrinsx online tool, corporate teams have been turned around from being inwardly focused dysfunctional silos, to highly collaborative groups by embracing a Culture of Respect. These have been fun, yet powerful, workshops with all participants agreeing that it has had a significant impact on the way they view their colleagues. Real productivity gains have been recorded.
Client Engagement Process
As there is no “typical” client, the length and depth of engagement varies based on the individual or team’s needs. Some clients continue to work with me on a regular basis for extended periods of time (in some cases, several years); others chose to simply use my unique abilities for ad-hoc check in sessions when they are feeling out of alignment with their inner sense of balance.
Executives leading teams engage me to facilitate their team building exercises and then retain my services to support them in exploring resolutions to dysfunctional group dynamics. I am equally comfortable serving in an advisory capacity on company Boards, be these for-profit, or not-for-profit organizations. My advice is always practical and achievable.
As each client’s need is unique, I typically meet with the client either in person or online to assess their needs and what they hope to achieve by engaging my services. Assuming there is a ‘fit’, I then ask for an upfront commitment based on what I believe will provide a reasonable chance of success in meeting their anticipated outcomes.
There is a greater risk in making the engagement too short rather than too long. I discuss this during the initial consultation. We then continue to work together at a pace which is suitable to ensure maximum effectiveness for the client.
The cost of the engagement varies based on the client's ability to pay. For me, it is more important my client receives real benefits from the work rather than being stressed over how to pay for it. I discuss this during the initial free client consultation.
The only way to obtain a sense of whether I could be of value to you and/or your organization is to call me and let’s make an appointment to meet and discuss your needs. There is NO obligation in this initial meeting. If I feel I am not the right person to support you, I will be upfront and tell you. Likewise, should I believe that I can be of significant value to you then I will make that clear too.
